WIC is a program that provides nutrition to mother's of young toddlers, up to the age of five, who have low incomes and struggle to support the needs of their family's. The mothers can be pregnant, breastfeeding, or post-breastfeeding. They supply checks to the families which allow them to buy nutritional food to their family. This program fulfills the immediate need of food for families. In addition to money for food, the clinics give health care referrals that help to cure nutritional problems. Also, they provide nutritional information for the young women. These women will then relay the nutritional information to their young. In the long run, the WIC clinics that reside in hospitals and other public institutions hope to help the women find jobs in order to provide adequate nutrition for their young ones. The information the women will receive at the clinics will, in the future, provide a good example for the young children. The program is federally funded.
